6 Dazzling Times Kate Middleton Wore Rarely Seen Royal Jewels

For her appearance at the London premiere of Tom Cruise’s Digger on Sept. 23, Kate Middleton turned heads, not just with the rich plum Jenny Packham gown she was wearing, but the stunning necklace with which she accessorized it. The Princess of Wales donned the Queen Mother’s Amethyst Sautoir Necklace, a rarely seen piece featuring pearls, diamonds and amethysts.
But the filmpremiere is just one of several occasions where the Princess Kate has reached into the royal vaults and pulled pieces that have left onlookers dazzled. From the Queen’s tiaras to Princess Diana’s sapphires, here are Kate’s six best moments in rare royal jewels.

The Cartier Halo Tiara, 2011

For her wedding day in 2011, Kate Middleton wore this elegant Cartier Halo Tiara which she borrowed from Queen Elizabeth. Though various royal women had worn the tiara over the years — the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne —the Queen herself never wore it publicly during her 70-year reign.

The Cartier Nizam of Hyderabad Diamond Necklace, 2014

Gifted to Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding present by Asaf Jah VII, the Nizam of Hyderabad Diamond Necklace was a favorite of the late sovereign’s in the 1940s and 1950s. Kate remains the only other member of the royal family to have worn it publicly, first at the Portrait Gala in 2014 (above) then again at the Diplomatic Corps Reception in 2019.

Strathmore Rose Tiara, 2023

The Princess of Wales dug deep into the vaults to pull out this rarely seen piece. For the state banquet celebrating the state visit from South Korea in 2023, she sported the Strathmore Rose Tiara, which had not been worn in 90 years. The headpiece originally belonged to the Queen Mother, who is the only other person known to have worn it.

To welcome German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a state visit to the U.K. in 2025, the Princess of Wales was a vision in a blue Jenny Packham floor-length gown. The star of the show, however, was the Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara that rested on her head. According to Garrard, the royal accessory was crafted in 1853 for Queen Victoria under the direction of her husband, Prince Albert. The tiara, which features 2,600 diamonds, was previously worn by the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth. Prior to the 2025 state visit, Queen Elizabeth was the last to wear the headpiece, having worn it in 2005 during a trip to Malta.

Princess Diana’s Sapphire Earrings, 2026

For a decade, Princess Kate wore a smaller pair of sapphire and diamond earrings, which many assumed had been modified from the pair that her late mother-in-law Diana was known for wearing.
In 2022, the Princess of Wales quietly debunked that rumor, wearing the larger pair for the first time during Trooping the Colour. The pair has become a staple in her closet and she’s worn them several times since, including the Anzac Day Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey earlier this year (above). The only other person to wear the pieces was Princess Diana.

Amethyst Sautoir Necklace, 2026

For the Digger world premiere in London’s Leicester Square, Kate Middleton broke out this dazzler, gifted to the Queen Mother by Queen Alexandra as a wedding gift in 1923. Queen Camilla, then the Duchess of Cornwall, was the last person to wear it at the premiere of Skyfall, back in 2012.
