All About Prince Edward’s Role in the Royal Family After His Recent Bump in the Line of Succession

Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, is the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
He was recently knocked down in the line of succession, becoming the 16th royal on the list.
Edward has been married to his wife, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, since 1999, and they share two children, Lady Louise and James, the Earl of Wessex.
On August 3, 2026, Princess Eugenie welcomed her first daughter with husband Jack Brooksbank, and officially shifted the royal family’s order of succession. Her newborn, whose name has yet to be announced, is the 15th in line to the British throne following her older brothers, August and Ernest, who are 13th and 14th in line, respectively.
By doing so, the line of succession also knocks her uncle, Prince Edward, down to 16th. Although he’s the youngest of Queen Elizabeth’s four children, he comes before his older sister, Princess Anne, as succession rules at the time of his birth still favored male heirs.
With that said, while Edward is even lower in the line of succession now, the royal, who has held the title of Duke of Edinburgh since 2023, is an active royal family member, carrying out a busy schedule of engagements across the UK and abroad for his charities and patronages.

He is Queen Elizabeth’s youngest child.

Edward is the youngest child of the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. He was born on March 10, 1964, and was the third royal in the line of succession when he was born. Above them were his older brothers, King Charles, born on November 14, 1948, and ex-Prince Andrew, born on February 19, 1960.
Edward’s last sibling is Princess Anne, also known as the Princess Royal, who’s the second-oldest of the pack, born on August 15, 1950. She is currently 18th in the line of succession.
Edward is married to Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.

On June 19, 1999, Edward married his wife, Sophie Rhys-Jones, at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. After their marriage, Edward, who held the title of Earl of Wessex, Sophie became the Countess of Wessex. In March 2023, when he was named the new Duke of Edinburgh following his father, she was named the Duchess of Edinburgh.
Throughout their marriage, in addition to serving their royal duties side by side, Edward and Sophie have welcomed two children. The couple became first-time parents when they welcomed their daughter, Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, in November 2003. Four years later, in December 2007, they welcomed their son, James Mountbatten-Windsor, who is now the Earl of Wessex.

His children don’t hold royal titles.

Much like Princess Eugenie’s decision not to give her kids royal titles, Edward and Sophie did the same with their kids. In an interview with The Sunday Times in 2020, Sophie explained the decision. “We try to bring them up with the understanding they are very likely to have to work for a living,” she told the outlet. “Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them and can decide to use them from 18, but I think it’s highly unlikely.”
If they were to use them, Lady Louise would become Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Edinburgh while her brother would be named His Royal Highness Prince James of Edinburgh.
Lady Louise graduated from the prestigious University of St. Andrews in Scotland in July 2026 with a degree in English. She was also seen competing in the Glebe Estate Carriage Driving Trials in August 2026. She placed fourth in the competition with her boyfriend, Felix da Silva-Clamp, by her side supporting her. James, for his part, has just recently graduated from his boarding school, Radley College.
Edward had a brief career in entertainment.
After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 1986 with a degree in history, Edward briefly trained with the Royal Marines but left before completing the course. He then tried to enter the entertainment industry, the first of his siblings to follow a career in the private sector.
Per Britannica, after leaving the Marines, Edward worked briefly in theatre production for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Theatre Company, before pivoting to TV and founding his independent production company, Ardent Productions, Ltd., in 1993. The company, which produced documentaries about the royal family’s history and educational programming, was moderately successful. Edward stepped down to fulfill his royal duties in 2002, and the firm was voluntarily dissolved in June 2009.
Edward has been a full-time royal since 2002.

In 2002, Edward became a full-time royal to support his mother, the Queen. Among his many commitments is The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, which was founded by his father in 1956. Per his official website, the award hopes to help “young people build their confidence and develop key life skills in order to reach their full potential.” In his role, Edward travels around the UK and across the globe to support the Award, meeting young participants, thanking the volunteers who make their achievements possible and hosting Gold Awards Celebrations.
Edward’s other patronages include supporting the youth, including being the Patron of the charity London Youth, and supporting the arts, including patronages with the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, The Orpheus Centre Trust, Creative Youth, Northern Ballet and the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland. He is also the Patron of the British Paralympic Association, GB Snowsport, Badminton Scotland, The Tennis & Rackets Association, and President of the Sport & Recreation Alliance.
