Days of Our Lives has long been associated with the concept of ‘super couples,’ from Doug Williams and Julie Olson to John Black and Marlena Evans, as well as fan favorites like Bo and Hope, Steve and Kayla, and Shane and Kimberly. Now actress Cherie Jimenez is weighing in on which pairing she believes could have that same lasting appeal.
Jimenez shared her thoughts during a recent interview on Slasher Scotty’s YouTube channel, where she reflected on joining Days of Our Lives, behind-the-scenes moments on set, and what viewers can expect for Gabi Hernandez in the months ahead.
Jiminez explained that the show conducted chemistry reads across the canvas to see where sparks might form. “Apparently, we do chemistry reads, which I didn't know that was a thing. I was having scenes with all the different actors. I had my scenes with Alex (Robert Scott Wilson), and then I had my scene with Chad (Billy Flynn) at the Bistro, and then I had a scene with Johnny (Carson Boatman) in my office and then I had a scene with Brady (Eric Martsolf)," she said. “In my mind, I'm just doing scenes with the guys, right? But apparently, they were starting to put me with different people in scenes just to see what our chemistry was like.”
She also addressed the disappointment some fans may feel about the end of JJ (Casey Moss) and Gabi, often referred to as ‘JJabi.’ “Once I figured that was a thing, I was like, ‘Oh, no way.’ So, then I started having my ideas of who I thought Gabi would end up with. I originally thought it was going to be J.J. and the new writers decided to take it in a completely different direction,” Jimenez shared.
The actress was excited to see what the future held, “So they were trying to figure out, okay, who are we going to put Gabi with next? And I was like, ‘Oh, this will be so interesting to see who I end up with.’”
Jimenez revealed that a heated scene with Philip Kiriakis, portrayed by John-Paul Lavoisier, ultimately sealed the decision. “What's funny is that the scene that I did with JP in the office, where I tell him to get out of my office and I throw his laptop, I guess that was our chemistry read, but I had no idea,” she said. “They loved our chemistry in that, so they decided that he was going to be the one.”
She admitted she was stunned when she first read the script., “I got the script and it said that I wake up in bed with Philip. I went, ‘this is the last person I expected,’ he wasn't even on my radar,” she said.
Once Jimenez knew her character was going to be paired up with Philip, she started diving into the characters’ histories to learn about their previous pairing. “Then I did a little research because both JP and I are the new Phillip and Gabi compared to Camila and J. Kenneth Johnson, and they had a brief little thing, but it didn't turn into anything,” she said.
Jimenez teased her co-star once she knew what was happening, “I joked around with him one day after I got the script and I was like, ‘Hey, so it looks like we're waking up in bed together this Friday.’ It was our scene in Horton Town Square where I asked him to lunch to talk about stuff and he's like, ‘Why?’ he just kind of looked at me and I giggled and I was like, ‘Oh no, this is going to be so awkward. Like I don't know what this is going to be like.’”
Once the two shared their romantic scenes together, for Jimenez it was over. “When we ended up together and we kissed and had our scene afterwards I go, ‘Oh, wow. We have chemistry.’ It's small, but we have something. We build upon that as we get to know each other, and we get more comfortable with each other as Cherie and JP, right?”
Jimenez added that she enjoyed exploring a new side of Gabi through the relationship. “I personally love this side of Gabi that has been coming out because of this relationship. I think it's a really fun one. JP is such an incredible actor. He plays Phillip in such a cool way that it keeps Gabi guessing,” she said.
The actress also enjoys playing with a different family dynamic. “I just like it and also I like that it's a Kiriakis and not a DiMera. So, like I get to step away from the DiMera’s and I get to go to the Kiriakis”

Looking ahead, Jimenez believes the pairing has long-term potential. “I love the relationship regardless of whatever all the things that are going to happen and it's just what it is. We have a really fun one that depending on just whatever happens, I could see us as we have great super couple potential,” she said.
