David Fincher’s Squid Game plans just hit a major roadblock at Netflix. The filmmaker’s long-developing English-language spinoff has received a surprising update after years in development.

David Fincher’s Squid Game spin-off is reportedly not moving forward

David Fincher’s long-developing Squid Game spinoff is officially dead at Netflix.

Sources close to the filmmaker told The Playlist that Netflix is no longer moving forward with Heckler, the working title for Fincher’s English-language version of the Korean phenomenon. The project was initially conceived as an American adaptation, though production was expected to take place in the United Kingdom.

Dennis Kelly, creator of the original British series Utopia, had been hired to write the spinoff. Kelly and Fincher shared indirect history, as Fincher had previously been attached to direct an HBO adaptation of Utopia. That earlier project fell apart over budget issues before Gillian Flynn made a different version for Amazon.

The project originated during a period when Netflix was eager to develop an American version. However, after years in development and various executive changes, Netflix’s franchise priorities shifted significantly. The project also lost momentum as Fincher moved on to other films, including The Adventures of Cliff Booth.

Netflix now appears more interested in exploring versions tailored to individual international markets. That could theoretically mean separate French, Norwegian, or other country-specific spinoffs. However, one source stressed that those examples remain speculative and no regional version is confirmed. Cate Blanchett appeared in the Squid Game finale as an American recruiter but had no involvement with Heckler.

Fincher has since completed principal photography on The Adventures of Cliff Booth. The Netflix film, written by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt, still needs reshoots scheduled for this month. Original cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt is unavailable due to The Batman Part II, so longtime collaborator Jeff Cronenweth will shoot the additional material.

Cliff Booth will debut in an exclusive two-week IMAX theatrical run on November 25 before streaming globally on Netflix on December 23.
