Rob Shuter has a theory about why Keith Urban is struggling with Nicole Kidman’s new romance, and it has less to do with lost love than lost access. The entertainment commentator made the claim during an appearance on Maureen Callahan’s podcast “The Nerve,” arguing that Urban’s 19-year marriage to the Oscar-winning actress gave him entry into Hollywood circles he would not otherwise have reached. Now that Kidman appears to have moved on, Shuter says that entry is closing.

“He knows this gravy train is coming to an end,” Shuter said. “He rode the Nicole Kidman train for a long time. He wouldn’t have been invited to the Oscars, the Golden Globes, or the big parties she gets invited to.”

Kidman filed for divorce from Urban in September 2025. It was finalized in January. The pair had been married since June 2006 and have two daughters — Sunday Rose, who turned 18 in June, and Faith Margaret, 15. Kidman has primary custody of Faith. Sunday, now an adult, is no longer subject to the custody arrangement.

Shuter suggested that even the period between the separation and Kidman’s new relationship had kept Urban connected to her story in a useful way. “Even after the divorce, as long as she was still single, they were connected. He still had the Nicole story to tell,” he said. Kidman’s move toward a new relationship, he argued, changes that. “If she moves on, it’s the end of that chapter. I think he’s terrified it’s over.”

The new relationship Shuter is referring to is Kidman’s reported romance with Michael Reinstein, 54, a Beverly Hills private equity founder with an estimated net worth of more than $250 million. The pair were photographed together at the Belmond Splendido Hotel in Portofino, Italy, in mid-July — poolside, close under a shared umbrella, holding Aperol Spritzes. On July 31, after Kidman’s private jet landed in California, Reinstein picked her up in a Ferrari 296 GTB valued at around $340,000.

Neither Kidman nor Reinstein has publicly confirmed the relationship.

Shuter also made claims about the couple’s daughters and their relationship with their father. “They haven’t met him yet,” he said of the girls and Reinstein. “I don’t think they’ll ever speak to their dad again. The kids know what happened. Nicole knows what happened. It will come out. It always does.” Those claims are Shuter’s alone. Neither Urban nor Kidman has addressed them publicly or confirmed any details about their family relationships since the divorce was finalized.

Shuter’s sharpest characterization of Urban’s position came near the end of his podcast remarks. “I bet he is devastated — but not because he loves her or is a decent man,” he said. “He’s devastated because he just lost the golden goose. She’s gone. She ain’t coming back.”
