British police are assessing a claim that the former Prince Andrew allegedly shared confidential reports with Jeffrey Epstein
The confidential information was allegedly related to his role as a trade envoy
In recently released emails, Andrew appeared to send Epstein information about government-related trips to South Asia and investment opportunities in Afghanistan
British police are looking into a claim that former Prince Andrew shared confidential documents with Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a U.K. trade envoy.
The BBC reported on Monday, Feb. 9, that the Thames Valley Police is investigating a complaint alleging that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor shared confidential information related to his role as a trade envoy in an email correspondence with Epstein. The complaint was lodged by the anti-monarchy group Republic. The police confirmed to the BBC that it had received the complaint and was “assessing the information.”
In one email in the latest release of Epstein evidence by the United States Department of Justice, a sender named as "The Duke" — thought to be Andrew, per the BBC — forwarded Epstein an email titled "South East Asia Visit Reports" from Amit Patel, whose email signature identifies him as "Special Adviser to HRH The Duke of York."
The email, dated Nov. 30, 2010, apparently includes reports from Andrew's trips to Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong and China in his role as a trade envoy for the British government.
In another message dated Dec. 24, 2010, Andrew appears to be presenting Epstein with what he says is a "confidential brief" on investment opportunities in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. That region was heavily affected by the U.S. war in Afghanistan, in which Great Britain was a military ally. At the time, reconstruction in the area would have still been under government control.

As cited by the BBC, official guidance for Andrew's role as a trade envoy "carries with it a duty of confidentiality in relation to information received. This may include sensitive, commercial, or political information shared about relevant markets/visits. This duty of confidentiality will continue to apply after the expiry of their term of office. In addition, the Official Secrets Acts 1911 and 1989 will apply."
Additionally, the emails are further proof that the former prince remained in contact with Epstein after the late billionaire's 2008 conviction on charges of procuring a child for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute, despite claiming to have cut off contact.
Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing related to his friendship with Epstein. He was stripped of all his royal titles and honors last fall due to the controversy surrounding their ties.
Both Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, 66, are heavily featured in the newly released trove of Epstein investigative documents
Emails show Andrew and Ferguson praising the late billionaire, thanking him for loans and business advice and sending photos and disturbing details about their daughters: Princess Beatrice, now 37, and Princess Eugenie, now 35.
Andrew's younger brother, Prince Edward, 61, became the first member of the royal family to publicly address the new Epstein evidence last week.
The Duke of Edinburgh was being interviewed by CNN's Eleni Giokos at the World Governments Summit in Dubai on Feb. 3, when he was asked for his thoughts on the Epstein files and how the royal family was "coping" with the new revelations.
“Well, I think it’s all really important always to remember the victims and who are the victims in all this?" Edward said. "A lot of victims in this."

A spokesperson for the couple said, “I can confirm The Prince and Princess have been deeply concerned by the continuing revelations. Their thoughts remain focused on the victims."
