There's nothing like an awkward family dinner.

In episode 3 of *Shrinking*'s third season, titled "D-Day," Jeff Daniels arrives as Jimmy's dad, Randy, to the delight of Alice (Lukita Maxwell) and the chagrin of Jason Segel's Jimmy — or should we say, Jimbo.

In **'s exclusive first look at Daniels' first appearance in the Apple TV comedy, Jimmy and Randy sit at the dinner table, where Jimmy is served a healthy helping of parental ribbing.

When Randy asks Jimmy for an update, he insists he's just living life — but when he tells his dad he's not seeing anyone, Alice interrupts to remind him about Sophie (Cobie Smulders).

"Word on the street is, he's too afraid to ask her out," Alice tells her grandpa, who has a field day with this information, telling the table, "Jimmy's always had trouble asking girls out. Every time he tried, he got a nosebleed."

"That was one time!" Jimmy says, insisting he "got over" his fear of talking to girls as Randy, Alice, and Summer burst into giggles.

As Maxwell tells EW, Jimmy and Randy have what she calls "a strained relationship."

"Jimmy feels like his dad wasn't there for him during the loss of his wife, and he wanted more support from a parent that he didn't feel like he got," Maxwell says. "And Alice's relationship with her grandpa is a loving, caring one, and she's trying to toe the line of having a relationship with her grandpa while also being sensitive towards her dad's feelings towards him."

Along with Randy's arrival, plenty more is in store for the Pasadena gang in the upcoming episode, which picks up after episode 2 ended with Jimmy and Alice saying goodbye to Louis (Brett Goldstein). Per the third episode's official logline, "Jimmy and Liz show up for Brian and Charlie when Ava goes into labor. Sean reconnects with his ex, Marisol."
