Jennifer Lawrence just signed on to a romantic comedy that had many producers fighting to land it. The Oscar winner's next project pairs her with the team behind one of 2025's biggest box office hits at a streamer she knows well.
The team behind Backrooms is expanding into romantic comedy with Jennifer Lawrence
Apple Original Films has acquired One Month Mark, a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lawrence, sources tell Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. The project emerged from one of the biggest spec auctions Hollywood has seen since the strikes ended.
Sophie Fleur de Bruijn wrote the spec script, which drew interest from more than 40 producers. Chernin Entertainment's David Ready and Peter Chernin landed the rights after a fiercely competitive auction. Lawrence will produce through her Excellent Cadaver banner alongside partner Justine Ciarrocchi. De Bruijn and Brady Fujikawa, EVP of Chernin Entertainment, will executive produce.
The film follows two individuals with opposite relationship patterns. "She has never made it past a month in a relationship. He has never gone longer than a month without one." The project does not yet have a director, but a search is already underway.
Several producers told Deadline the script was "one of the best rom-com scripts in years." Insiders say producers required buyers to use Embershot to securely read the script. The platform logged 892 views from producers, agents, managers, and studio executives.

De Bruijn previously sold her debut feature, Early Action, to Apple in a competitive sale. She trained at Second City, iO, and the Upright Citizens Brigade. One Month Mark marks her second collaboration with the streamer.
The deal deepens Apple's relationship with Lawrence, now spanning four projects. She recently wrapped Martin Scorsese's What Happens at Night opposite Leonardo DiCaprio for Apple. She also starred in and produced 2022's Causeway and produced the Peabody-winning documentary Bread & Roses.
Chernin Entertainment is riding a strong year with Backrooms grossing over $215 million worldwide. The company also released Netflix hits Apex and Man on Fire.
