Johnny Depp looked nearly unrecognizable with long, salt-and-pepper hair and colored contacts in the trailer for his chilling new thriller film, Day Drinker.
Depp ditched his brown waves and goatee for a silver hair transformation just a few months after he debuted gray curls and mutton chops for his leading role as Ebenezer Scrooge in Ebenezer.
Day Drinker—which also stars Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz—marks only the second time Depp has returned to the screen in eight years.
Johnny Depp is adding another face to his catalog of dramatic, onscreen transformations.
On September 24, Lionsgate Films released the trailer for the chilling new thriller film Day Drinker, which stars Depp as a mysterious yacht guest who finds himself connected to an unexpected crime, per Variety. For his new role, Depp ditched his signature brown waves and goatee for a silver hair transformation that makes him look completely different.
In the trailer, Depp showed off long, salt-and-pepper hair and a full beard-and-mustache combo. The film’s glam team offset Depp’s voluminous, well-kept beard with silver waves that spilled out from a short ponytail as his character blurred the lines between fantasy and reality. A pair of bright blue contact lenses made Depp’s transformation all the more striking.
Madelyn Cline—who made the switch from blonde to brunette in July—and Penélope Cruz—who debuted her blondest hair yet for her role in Olivia Wilde’s The Invite—will star opposite Depp in the upcoming action thriller.

Depp’s new role marks the actor’s second major, onscreen appearance since 2018, when he starred as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, he also debuted scraggly gray hair and mutton chops while sharing a first look at his character, Ebenezer Scrooge, in Ti West’s upcoming dark-fantasy film Ebenezer. For the role, Depp shaved off his signature mustache and goatee, and adopted Scrooge’s signature scowl.

The actor’s repertoire of notable onscreen transformations also includes his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the title character in Edward Scissorhands, the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, and Sweeney Todd in the 2007 musical slasher film. While not as theatrical as some of his previous costumes, Depp’s most recent makeover is definitely unexpected.
Day Drinker is set to be released in theaters on March 26, 2027.
