Kate Middleton's Christmas outfit had a hidden connection to a turning point of her cancer journey.

On Dec. 25, the Princess of Wales, 43, sported her bespoke Blaze Milano coat for the Morning Service at Church of St. Mary Magdalene on the Sandringham Estate, which she attended with Prince William and their children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7.

It was symbolic for Princess Kate to wear the burgundy plaid coat at the end of year defined by recovery, as she most notably wore it at the start of 2025 for the surprise stop at the London hospital where she previously received treatment for cancer.

In January, Princess Kate made an unannounced visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital's Chelsea site, where she met patients currently undergoing treatment and staff working across the hospital.

The outing came with the confirmation that she received treatment from The Royal Marsden during her own cancer journey and had become a Joint Patron of the The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust with Prince William.

Following the stop, the Princess of Wales announced that she was "in remission" after undergoing treatment for cancer in 2024. Princess Kate shared that news about her health in March 2024, reduced her royal duties and said that September that she completed chemotherapy treatment.

In the January update, Princess Kate wrote in part on X then, "It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support. C"

The Princess of Wales returned a more regular frequent schedule of royal engagements after announcing that she was in remission and has spoken with candor about the "really difficult" phase after receiving cancer treatment, as well as how nature brought her solace during her recovery.

As she reclaims her royal role, PEOPLE's exclusive cover story explores how Princess Kate’s gradual reemergence followed not only the scrutiny of her own diagnosis but the tough treatment itself — and the fortitude it took to come through it.
