Kelly Ripa shared she injured her back while reaching for toilet paper in a hotel bathroom

During a Live with Kelly and Mark behind-the-scenes clip, Ripa said that the ā€˜embarrassing’ incident unfolded while she was staying in a hotel

This comes after her recent gum graft surgery earlier this month

Kelly Ripa says she hurt her back just before the most recent episode of Live with Kelly and Mark — and the culprit was rather unexpected.

In a behind-the-scenes clip shared to the official Live with Kelly and Mark Instagram account, Ripa, 55, could be seen chatting with audience members about a recent back injury, telling them: ā€œIt’s really embarrassing.ā€

ā€œGuess how I hurt my back? Sitting on a toilet,ā€ she told the crowd, who responded with laughter.

According to Ripa, the incident unfolded while she was staying in a hotel with her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos.

ā€œTypically the toilet tissue is on this side, like a normal person,ā€ she said, gesturing to her right as she sat on a chair to re-enact the ā€œembarrassingā€ moment.

ā€œWe were staying at a hotel, it was over here,ā€ she continued, gesturing to her left before showing how she reached to the side with her right arm. ā€œSo I went like that and hurt my back.ā€

ā€œYeah, I said it,ā€ she joked in the clip. ā€œI hurt my back sitting on a toilet. Okay?ā€

This isn’t the first time that Ripa has been candid about her health in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, the host returned to morning TV after taking time off to recover from gum graft surgery — a common procedure used to treat receding or thinning gums by transferring healthy gum tissue to cover exposed tooth roots.

ā€œ[I’m] so much better,ā€ she told PEOPLE following her surgery. ā€œIt was fine. It was definitely necessary. I delayed it for five years. I really did because I was like, ā€˜I’ll wait until I retire.’ And then, eventually my dentist was like, ā€˜Okay, now we have to finish it.’ ā€

Ripa spent some of her down time on vacation, admitting it was ā€œa little strangeā€ to have stitches in her mouth.

ā€œShe doesn’t follow instructions very well,ā€ Consuelos joked to PEOPLE.

ā€œOh, I was talking the whole time,ā€ she admitted, going against her dentist’s orders. ā€œI was talking like crazy. He was like, ā€˜You’re not supposed to be talking.’ I’m like, ā€˜I’m fine!’ It did look weird, though, when I talked.ā€

She continued, ā€œWhat was funny, a few of my producers said, ā€˜You just need to take the cotton out, take the cotton out from under your lower lip.’ And I was like, ā€˜There is no cotton. That is just swelling. That’s why I’m not at work today.ā€™ā€

Ripa previously shared on her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast that she required the surgery because ā€œI’m an over-brusher.ā€

ā€œI brush my teeth too much. It’s a good-bad habit,ā€ Ripa explained prior to the surgery. ā€œBut I’ve caused gum recession down here specifically, and so they have gotta re-gum my gums.ā€

During the July 27 broadcast of Live, during which he welcomed guest co-host Kevin Jonas, Consuelos shared that Ripa’s doctor recommended the procedure years ago and noted that the recovery was especially ā€œpainful.ā€

ā€œShe famously doesn’t feel pain,ā€ he said. ā€œWhen she goes into the dentist, she doesn’t use the Novocaine. But this one hurts, so I know it’s bad.ā€

Live with Kelly and Mark airs weekdays in syndication (check local listings).
