Legendary NBA Coach Gregg Popovich Marries Ex-Wife of His Longtime Spurs Assistant

Gregg Popovich has added another ring!
The NBA coaching legend, 77, married Mary Barth Budenholzer on Wednesday, Sept. 16 in Bexar County, Texas, according to court records obtained by TMZ.
Budenholzer, 61, is the ex-wife of Popovich’s former longtime assistant coach, Mike Budenholzer.
The newlyweds were spotted at several games last season as the team went on to clinch a berth in the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks.

While it’s unclear when the couple began their relationship, Popovich and Mike Budenholzer go way back.
The tandem won four NBA titles together (1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007) in San Antonio, where the assistant coach served from 1996 until 2013.
The Arizona native, 57, joined the Spurs as a video coordinator at the start of the 1994-95 season. Budenholzer later went on to take his first head coaching position with the Atlanta Hawks for the 2013-14 season. He was most recently the head coach in Phoenix before he was fired after one season in April 2025.

The Budenholzers, who divorced in 2016, share four children together, sons William Vincent and John Brent and daughters Savoia Elizabeth and Hanna Louise.
Popovich’s first wife, Erin, died in 2018 after a long illness. The two were married for 41 years and share two children, Jill and Mickey, and two grandchildren.
For Popovich, the marriage comes nearly two years after he suffered a mild stroke just before a game.

Months later, the beloved coach of the Spurs for 29 seasons announced that he would step away from the bench to assume a new role as the team’s president of basketball operations.
“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” Popovich said in a statement at the time. “I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me.”
