Few sitcoms have captured the beautiful chaos of marriage quite as vividly as *Mad About You*. Premiering in 1992, the series quickly became one of NBC’s crown jewels during the network’s powerhouse “Must-See TV” era, nestled comfortably alongside hits like *Friends *and *Seinfeld*.

Audiences fell in love with Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt’s pitch-perfect chemistry as Paul and Jamie Buchman, a married couple whose everyday misadventures felt hilariously — sometimes painfully — relatable. Critics and awards voters loved it, too. Over its seven-season run, *Mad About You* picked up 12 Emmys while scoring nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series four years in a row.

The series returned in 2019 for a brief 12-episode reboot on Spectrum Originals, but it didn’t have the same staying power.

Nearly three decades after the original *Mad About You* left the air, the sitcom still holds a warm spot in our collective memory thanks to its sharp writing, emotional clarity, and lived-in performances. As for those actors who brought the Buchmans and their friends to life, they’ve gotten up to plenty in the intervening years.

Join ** as we catch up with the faces behind this classic sitcom and see where they are today.

Paul Reiser (Paul Buchman)

Paul Reiser starred as Paul, a thinly veiled version of himself, albeit one who worked as a documentary filmmaker rather than a comedian.

Reiser began his career at comedy clubs and established himself as an up-and-comer early on. Then, in his mid-20s, he landed a role in the ensemble of Barry Levinson’s Oscar-nominated *Diner *(1982). He then played a by-the-book foil to Eddie Murphy's Axel Foley in *Beverly Hills Cop *(1984) before using his affability for sneaky, malevolent purposes in James Cameron’s classic *Aliens *(1986).

Multiple stand-up specials fortified his stage reputation, while *My Two Dads* made him a recognizable TV face. But it was *Mad About You* that made him a true star. Though he stayed largely out of the spotlight in the years after the show’s finale, he reemerged with the short-lived *The Paul Reiser Show *and supporting work in *Whiplash *(2014), *Concussion *(2015), and the Amazon series *Red Oaks*.

That led to his recurring turn on the Netflix juggernaut *Stranger Things* and an Emmy-nominated supporting performance in *The Kominsky Method*.

Reiser told PEOPLE that returning for the *Mad About You *reboot “really took no transition at all.”

“We were all so fond of each other and we spent seven years together. The minute we walked into the space, it was so familiar,” he said. “It actually felt weird that it didn’t feel weird… It’s a nice luxury to get to do an arc of these characters over the years. And there is nothing topical about the show. It’s about people, then and now. That doesn’t go out of fashion.”

Reiser has been married to Paula Ravets since 1988 and they have two children.

Helen Hunt (Jamie Buchman)

Helen Hunt played the uptight, often intense Jamie, a perfect complement to the more laid-back Paul. Their dueling neuroses always worked in comedic concert.

While this was Hunt’s star-making role, she was already an experienced veteran, having begun acting as a child. Her early work in the ’70s included *Swiss Family Robinson *and a string of guest spots leading up to her first full-time grown-up gig on *It Takes Two *in the early ’80s.

She eventually graduated to major screen roles in *Project X *(1987) and *Next of Kin *(1989) before this unassuming sitcom became a smash and made her a household name. She was Emmy-nominated in all seven seasons, and took home the prize four times — to go with her four Golden Globes.

Before long, the sitcom star was hitting a new level — first with the box-office hit *Twister *(1996), then by winning a Best Actress Oscar for *As Good As It Gets* (1997), opposite fellow winner Jack Nicholson. She went on to play Tom Hanks’ star-crossed almost-fiancee in *Cast Away *(2000) in addition to romantic leads in *What Women Want *(2000) and *The Curse of the Jade Scorpion *(2001).

Hunt told PEOPLE in 2019 that she and Reiser maintained a close friendship in the years between the original show’s conclusion and the reboot.

“We had lunch every few months. I’d hear about what he was working on or how his kids were and vice versa,” she said. “Working with Paul is the most fun. We are so like-minded and that’s just very comforting. It’s a rare thing to find someone who shares your taste and sensibility.”

Though leading roles became less frequent, she did theater, continued directing (after getting started with a pair of *Mad* episodes), and eventually scored her second Oscar nomination, this time for the indie darling *The Sessions *(2012), alongside John Hawkes.

Her recent work includes *I See You* (2018) and *In Cold Light *(2025), as well as recurring parts on *Blindspotting *and *Hacks*.

Hunt shares a daughter with former partner Michael Carnahan.

Anne Ramsay (Lisa Stemple)

Anne Ramsay played Jamie’s highly opinionated older sister Lisa, who lived a much more chaotic life.

“She was just a juicy character to play. It was such an off-the-wall character that every time I would come on, you’d have to give me the punch line… People expected it,” Ramsay told *Windy City Times* in 2005. “I feel spoiled because of the writing on that show… I didn’t want *Mad About You* to ever end, but of course it did.”

The premiere of the show marked a big career moment for Ramsay, as she’d also just appeared in the hit baseball comedy *A League of Their Own *(1992). Once the show reached its conclusion in 1999, the actress landed roles in Tim Burton’s *Planet of the Apes* (2001) and enjoyed stints on prestige hits like *The L Word, Six Feet Under*,* *and *Dexter*.

After a three-season run on *The Secret Life of the American Teenager*, she garnered strong acclaim for her performance in *The Taking of Deborah Logan *(2014). More recently, in addition to reprising Lisa in the sitcom reboot, she portrayed Greta Van Susteren in *Bombshell* (2019).

Leila Kenzle (Fran Devanow)

Leila Kenzle played Jamie’s sarcastic best friend, Fran.

The New York native has a string of high-profile TV credits on her resume, including *Diagnosis Murder*, *Thirtysomething*, *The Cosby Show*, *Duckman*, *The Nanny*, *The Golden Girls*, and *Friends*.

But she eventually left acting behind and successfully pursued a new career as a psychotherapist. Her last roles were in James Mangold’s twisty thriller *Identity *(2003) and an episode of *Judging Amy*.

Kenzle has been married to actor and teacher Nick Monaco since 1994.

Richard Kind (Mark Devanow)

Fran’s histrionic, hypochondriacal ex-husband was played by legendary character actor Richard Kind.

The actor discussed his “lovely” time on the show with TV Line in 2024, including the revelation that he was rather unceremoniously let go from his fan-favorite role: “I didn’t really do any after the second season. I wasn’t invited back, believe it or not. And then later on, about season 7 or 8, I came back and did a few guest spots. But I had gone off to do* Spin City*.”

Still, Kind has nothing but praise for Reiser and Hunt. “That was a lovely show. The two of them were brilliant. I used to call myself parsley on a plate of meat and potatoes.”

As he mentioned, *Spin City *became his full-time job after *Mad About You*. Beyond that, his hundreds of credits over 40 years are simply too many to name. He did reunite with Reiser for *Red Oaks* and was a regular in the sprawling ensemble cast of Michael Mann’s horse-racing series *Luck*.

The New Jersey native has been a scene-stealer in such critically acclaimed films as *A Serious Man *(2009) and *Beau Is Afraid* (2023) — not to mention his voice performance as Bing Bong in *Inside Out *(2015). He was recently featured on *Only Murders in the Building*.

Kind has three children with his ex-wife, Dana Stanley.

John Pankow (Ira Buchman)

John Pankow played Ira, Paul’s sardonic, womanizing cousin.

Though he’s a prolific stage actor who’s spent much of his career in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, Pankow is also a recognizable face from television and film.

Prior to *Mad About You*, he broke out in William Friedkin’s *To Live and Die in L.A. *(1985) and followed it with roles in *Batteries Not Included *(1987), George A. Romero’s *Monkey Shines *(1988), and Oliver Stone’s *Talk Radio *(1988).

The Missouri native later landed a role on Showtime’s *Episodes *and booked supporting roles in *Bride Wars* (2009) and *Morning Glory *(2010).

Pankow and his wife, actress Kristine Sutherland — best known for playing Buffy's mother, Joyce, on *Buffy the Vampire Slayer* — have a daughter together.
