There's something not quite right about Widow's Bay.
PEOPLE has an exclusive new teaser trailer for the Apple TV horror series, which stars Matthew Rhys as a desperate mayor willing to do whatever he can to revive his struggling island community.
Everything is a bit eerie as the teaser begins, and Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) asks Wyck (Stephen Root), "Have you ever heard of a hag?"
"Every sailor knows the story of the hag," Wyck tells him, before beginning a rendition of an old sailor's song about the legend while creepy happenings haunt the island town.
"I don't understand. How do you die?" Tom asks him, eager for answers. "She crawls into your bed and sits on your face," Wyck informs him.

Widow's Bay, per a synopsis, "blends genuine horror with character-driven comedy" as chaos begins to reign over the "quaint island town," where "something lurks beneath the surface."
“Mayor Tom Loftis is desperate to revive his struggling community. There’s no Wi-Fi, spotty cellular reception and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don’t. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination," the synopsis continues.
The problem is: Just as Tom succeeds in his mission to draw tourists to the island, the locals prove to be right about their superstitions. "After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again," per the synopsis.
Alongside Rhys and Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kate O'Flynn, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey star in the series, which premieres April 29 on the streamer. Jeff Hiller also stars.

The series comes just months after Rhys' turn as a ruthless billionaire in Netflix's The Beast in Me. He starred alongside Claire Danes in the limited series, and they both earned nominations for their performances at the Golden Globe Awards and Actor Awards. Rhys, 51, was also nominated at the Critics' Choice Awards for his role.
Widow's Bay premieres April 29 on Apple TV.
