During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Michelle Obama shared that she and her husband, Barack Obama, were scheduled to see Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner on the day that they died

The former first lady remembered the Reiners as "some of the most decent and courageous people"

She also made a pointed comment about the couple not being "deranged" after President Donald Trump blamed their deaths on "Trump derangement syndrome"

Michelle Obama is remembering her friends Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.

The 61-year-old former first lady appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, Dec. 15, where she was asked about the couple, who were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, Dec. 14. The couple's son Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested and charged with murder in connection to his parents' deaths on Monday.

“We’ve known them for many, many years, and we were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night,” Michelle said of herself and husband Barack Obama, referencing a meeting that was scheduled to take place on Sunday, Dec. 14, with the couple.

After the news of the Reiners’ deaths was released, former President Barack Obama released a statement on X, writing, “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen.”

Barack went on to praise the director’s philanthropic and activism work, noting, “But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”

Following the arrest of Nick, a timeline of events has begun to surface.

Multiple sources told PEOPLE that Rob and Nick got into a heated argument at a Saturday night holiday party prior to the director and his wife being found dead on Sunday afternoon.

One of the sources said, "Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous."

TMZ first reported that Rob and Nick got into a "very loud argument" at the Christmas party, which was hosted by Conan O'Brien on Saturday night.

Rob and Michele, 68, then reportedly left the party after the argument, according to TMZ.

The couple were found slain in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, Dec. 14. Sources previously told PEOPLE the couple was discovered by their daughter Romy.

Nick is being held without bail. He was located by police near the campus of the University of Southern California, per ABC News, some six hours after his parents' bodies were discovered. He was arrested around 9:15 p.m. local time. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call to provide medical aid at Rob and Michele's home around 3:30 p.m.

During her late night appearance, Michelle also spoke about the Reiners’ legacy and impact, making subtle jabs at President Donald Trump without specifically naming him. Trump came under fire for his comments on Truth Social about the Reiners’ deaths, saying they were a result of “Trump derangement syndrome.”

“Let me just say this — unlike some people — Rob and Michele Reiner are some of the most decent, courageous people you ever want to know,” the former first lady said.

“They are not deranged or crazed, what they have always been are passionate people in a time when there’s not a lot of courage going on, they were the kind of people who were ready to put their actions behind what they cared about," she continued. "And they cared about their family and they cared about this country and they cared about fairness and equity. And that is the truth, I do know them.”
