The departure of Nick Reiner's star lawyer, Alan Jackson, from the high-profile murder case fueled questions about what is going on behind the scenes and how the shake-up could impact Reiner's defense.
Jackson previously scored major wins for former movie star Kevin Spacey, who was accused of sexual assault, and Karen Read, whose murder trial captured audiences across the country. At a court appearance Jan. 7 in which Jackson was expected to act as a zealous advocate while his client was formally apprised of the charges against him and potentially entered a plea, Jackson instead asked to step away.
“We have no choice but to withdraw as counsel and ask to be removed," he told Judge Theresa McGonigle.
USA TODAY spoke to several California-based litigators who said the issue for Jackson may have come down to whether Jackson would get paid.
"It's likely money. In the business we say, 'Mr. Green didn't show up,'" said Neama Rahmani, a Los Angeles-based litigator and former federal prosecutor.

Here's why Nick Reiner's potentially complicated financial situation could have caused an issue and what to expect next in the case:
Why did Alan Jackson withdraw from murder case?
Jackson didn't respond to USA TODAY's request for comment on why he withdrew from the case. In public remarks, he said he couldn't disclose the cause for both legal and ethical reasons, but that it came down to circumstances beyond his and Nick Reiner's control.
"My team and I remain deeply, deeply committed to Nick Reiner and to his best interests," Jackson said outside the courthouse.

Several California-based lawyers told USA TODAY money could have been the issue.
Someone like Alan Jackson would probably charge a seven-figure sum as a retainer at the beginning of the case, Rahmani said. The total price tag to go through a trial could tally $5-10 million, including the cost for experts, lawyers beyond Jackson, and consultants to help with jury selection, he added.
"It sounds more financial to me. Just my spider sense," he said.
California has a so-called "slayer statute" that prevents anyone who "feloniously and intentionally kills" another person from inheriting that person's assets.
Scott Tenley, a former prosecutor in Los Angeles County, said in an email that probate courts, which deal with assets after someone dies, could determine Reiner probably killed his parents and block him under the slayer statute from inheriting, without waiting for a possible conviction.
"The availability of this procedure would make it incredibly difficult for Nick Reiner to force his parents’ estate to disburse any inheritance to him pending his trial," Tenley said.

Reiner is now being represented by a public defender – a lawyer who is paid through taxpayer funds. That bolsters the idea that Jackson's withdrawal came down to money, according to Eliot Krieger, a Southern California trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor.
Eliot Krieger, a Southern California trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor, said in a text message that Jackson may not be able to explain his reasons publicly because they fall under attorney-client privilege, or involve a conflict of interest. But his replacement with a public defender could be a clue.
"We can't know what that conflict is," Krieger said. "I can tell you that in some cases it is ability of the defendant to pay."
Is it common for public defenders to step in?
Reiner's new lawyer, public defender Kimberly Greene, made it clear this is far from the first time her office has replaced a private attorney.
"It's not uncommon for private counsel to turn over cases to us," she said in remarks outside the courthouse. "Nothing about that would complicate the situation."

Greene said she hadn't spoken to Nick Reiner's family and had only talked to him briefly in the morning.
"He was understanding that there was going to be a change in counsel," she said. "We haven't had any in-depth conversation."
Will Jackson's withdrawal hurt Reiner's defense?
Tenley said replacing Jackson with a public defender won't necessarily hurt Reiner's legal defense.
"Attorneys in the public defender’s office have decades of experience defending against murder charges and presenting mental health-related defenses," he said.
However, if Reiner pleads not guilty by reason of insanity, the public defender's budget could curtail his ability to seek out and hire the most expensive medical experts in the country to bolster that defense.

Krieger said he's confident the public defender's office will send their most experienced lawyers in for a high-profile case like Reiner's, but public defender offices do also tend to be overworked and understaffed.
"His odds were certainly good with Alan Jackson," Krieger said. "I guess we'll see what happens with the public defender."
Why wasn't Nick Reiner filmed or photographed in court?
Judge McGonigle ordered that Nick Reiner, who was wearing a dark-colored jail outfit with a white shirt beneath it, not be filmed or photographed at the Jan. 7 court proceedings.
She made the same order at Reiner's first court appearance in December, when he was wearing a suicide-prevention vest.
McGonigle didn't explain her reasons, but the court's communications office told USA TODAY ahead of the Jan. 7 proceedings that the judge has discretion over video recordings of proceedings.
The judge could have been concerned that an image of Reiner in a suicide vest, in particular, could spread rapidly online and make it harder to seat an impartial jury, according to Krieger.
"Photos or videos of the defendant in such a vest could bias potential jurors or the public by implying mental instability, desperation, guilt, or dangerousness – even though suicide risk doesn't prove guilt," he said.
