Erin Breese noticed her arms turning red from the sun while rewatching her wedding video

The TikTok video of her sunburn discovery went viral with 4.6 million views and mixed reactions

Breese advises brides to test sunscreen options and consider timing ceremonies to avoid sun exposure

As someone with fair skin, Erin Breese had a feeling an outdoor wedding in Mexico was a little bit risky.

However, as an avid sunscreen user, the 28-year-old felt like she would be safe during the short ceremony, especially since it was in November. Before doing her makeup that morning, she made a point to put on sunblock, but there was one place she missed: her arms.

As the Austin, Texas resident stood at the aisle, she started to feel a little warm, yet it was only later that she noticed just how sunburnt she got during her ceremony.

"I noticed my arm felt hot after the ceremony, and I vaguely remember saying to my husband, 'I'm sure I'm all red from standing in the sun,'" Breese tells PEOPLE.

While she didn't notice her arm "looking red at any point on the day," it was one of the biggest things she noticed after getting their wedding video back.

When she rewatched the ceremony section, she noticed her arms getting redder and redder. When she showed it to her husband, he told her that he didn't see it at first.

"I put the clips side-by-side to compare them and see if I was imagining it. Once I realized it was noticeable, I thought it was just too funny not to post and hoped others might get a laugh out of it, too," Breese says.

She shared a video on her TikTok of the discovery, captioned, "when ur a pale girl and have ur ceremony in the sun so you watch your arm get progressively redder."

"Some people are validating me, saying that they also get red fast in the sun, while others say I should've known better and used sunscreen, but most comments have been lighthearted and funny!" Breese tells PEOPLE.

The newlywed emphasizes that "as a redhead, I am an avid daily sunscreen wearer."

"I am usually very good about applying sunscreen before spending any time in the sun," she says. "On my wedding day, specifically, I know I had it on my face, but I don't think I even thought about putting it on my arms!"

Although the sunburn looked dramatic on camera, she notes that it went away quickly.

"For the record, it wasn't a lasting sunburn and went away before the end of the night, so my skin was just reacting to the heat at that moment," Breese shares.

As for other people getting married in direct sun, she encourages them to "experiment ahead of time with sunscreens you can use that won't stain or ruin your dress."

"You can also do what I did and have your ceremony in the cooler months, later in the day, and keep the ceremony short!" she says.
