Chad Ochocinco Johnson was one of the premier wide receivers for the Cincinnati Bengals. Through his 11 years in the NFL, he recorded 11,059 receiving yards and scored 67 touchdowns. However, he had to retire without even suffering a career-ending injury or hitting the retirement age.

In his advice to younger athletes, he made one thing very clear.

“I should have played, because I never got hurt,” Johnson said on the Chasing No 1 podcast. “I should have played well into 15, 16, 17 [years], whatever it may be. … Be conscious, you know, of your decision-making, because, you know, 3 seconds of anger cost me a lifetime’s worth of work.”

Chad Johnson was known for his attitude and wild acts, like trying out for an MLS team and asking for a cage match with coach Marvin Lewis. The Bengals tolerated him since he was also one of the best wideouts in the league at that time. However, on the heels of a statistically low season, he was traded to the New England Patriots. Johnson recorded yet another bad season over there.

He was released by the team in 2012 and was signed by his home team, the Miami Dolphins. However, distressing news emerging about his arrest following an alleged assault on his then-wife forced the Dolphins to cut him. The most shocking claim was that Johnson had head-butted his wife. She pursued charges of simple battery and domestic violence.

That marked the end of Johnson’s career at a premature age of 11 years.

Chad Johnson and his legal counsel had negotiated a no-jail-time deal with the prosecution, having agreed to community service in exchange for the time behind bars. Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh had added a three-month probation, since he missed meeting his probation officer in the previous three months. However, it all backfired on Johnson after he slapped his lawyer’s behind when asked if he was satisfied with his legal representation. The judge sentenced him to 30 days in prison, with the deal thrown out the window.

However, he has expressed regret for his actions. Before the sentencing, Johnson apologized for the incident on Showtime’s Inside the NFL.

“I lost two things that I love: football and being married. Being a husband, being a lover was an honor. And I lost that. They have that saying, ‘You never know what you have until it’s gone.’ And now I finally know what they mean.

“I take full responsibility for everything. Always will. Always have. Where do I go from here? I gotta work on Chad. Chad has to work on Chad. Chad has to go deep down inside and figure out where you went wrong. At what point did you lose focus on what’s most important–especially the game of football. There was a time where, when I touched that field Sunday, you knew what time it was. At some point, I had drifted off track away from that.”

Johnson played for the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes in 2014, and suited up to play gridiron football in Mexico in 2017. Both stints were unsuccessful.

However, he has hinted at a return multiple times now. In 2013, he had hoped for a spot with the Houston Texans (per CSNHouston.com), but knew that he couldn’t be “too picky,” knowing that his position was threatened following the lawsuit.

“I did mess up, you know I messed up once. I made my bed and have to lay in it. Some people are given second chances, some people aren’t. I think at this point I’ve learned my lesson.”

In 2019, Johnson said he was planning to return as a kicker, and it made sense because the wideout could put his strong legs to use, as he had also played soccer. But a second chance never materialized.

14 years after his exit, Chad Ochocinco once again teased a possible return to the gridiron. Back in January 2026, on his 48th birthday, Johnson, on X, wrote that he’s “open to come back next year to play.” It is unfortunate that the once-star wideout never got to restart his career, but he has made his peace with it.
