Samara Weaving tells PEOPLE that costar Kyra Sedgwick "came in like a wrecking ball and dropped the mic and left" while filming their memorable scene in Carolina Caroline

In the romantic crime drama, Sedgwick plays the estranged mother of Weaving's Caroline and the two share a raw moment in the film

The actresses didn't spend much time together before filming, a decision Weaving says helped their dynamic onscreen, while Sedgwick called the lengthy scene a rare opportunity to perform multiple uninterrupted 12-minute takes

Samara Weaving has high praise for her Carolina Caroline costar Kyra Sedgwick.

"She came in like a wrecking ball and dropped the mic and left," Weaving, 34, tells PEOPLE about Sedgwick's performance.

The actresses share one of the film's most memorable scenes, in which Weaving's Caroline Daniels — a small-town woman who gets involved with a charismatic but dangerous grifter (Kyle Gallner) — tracks down her estranged mother, played by Sedgwick.

Weaving says she and Sedgwick, 60, weren't able to spend much time together before filming, which ultimately worked in their favor.

"I'm glad that we didn't have a dinner or anything before because we meet her as her character, which for that scene, it was kind of great," Weaving says. "Now that I've hung out with her for a bit, she's the loveliest woman alive. But those two days where she came in were one of ... I mean, that performance is incredible."

In the scene, Caroline comes face-to-face with the mother she' tracked down, only to be met with indifference from the hard-drinking woman, who mocks her daughter for coming to find her.

Speaking with PEOPLE at the film's Los Angeles premiere on May 28, Sedgwick reflected on how many takes they tried for the scene.

"I think we did about eight or nine on one side. Or eight or nine on one side. Yeah, nine on both sides, I think," she said. "But it was great because every time we did it, we did it all the way through, so it was a 12-minute take, which is great, rare."

Sedgwick also opened up about stepping into the role of Caroline's rough-around-the-edges mother.

"I know people like this exist," she said. "That's my job, is to play people very different than me. I think that's what makes it fun, to step in other people's shoes for a while."

Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier, Carolina Caroline stars Weaving, Gallner, Sedgwick, and Jon Gries.

It's the third movie Weaving has released since March: She also starred in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come as well as Over Your Dead Body.

Weaving opened up to PEOPLE about this exciting chapter in her life. In addition to releasing three films, she and her husband, writer-director Jimmy Warden, 37, also welcomed their first child.

"I think I'm still processing it all," she says. "I mean, it's exciting. It's wonderful!"

Carolina Caroline is now playing in theaters.
