The news came after TMZ seemingly caught him going into McConnell’s home, only to learn Tillis lives there, too

North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis has revealed that Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell is his landlord.

Tillis was approached by TMZ while walking up to McConnell’s Washington, D.C., home this week, prompting an explanation as the public searches for answers about McConnell’s condition after a lengthy hospital stay.

When asked whether he was visiting the Kentucky senator following his discharge from a rehabilitation center, Tillis, 65, clarified that he actually lives there. He told TMZ that he rents a carriage house on the property, describing it as a “separate edifice” from McConnell’s residence, but admitted that he has gotten a kick out of the media mixing up their homes during his colleague’s recovery.

“That’s why I’ve had so much fun. Everybody talking about the whole process,” Tillis said in reference to people speculating about activity at his house.

Tillis, who is retiring from the Senate at the end of the year, said he moved into the carriage house temporarily after selling his condo in March and plans to remain there until his term ends.

The encounter came shortly after McConnell’s office announced on Thursday, Aug. 6, that he was finally going home to complete his recovery from an apparent fall on June 14, which left him unconscious.

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” a statement from McConnell, 84, read. “Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” the statement continued.

McConnell has remained out of public view since he was hospitalized nearly eight weeks ago. Aside from releasing two still photos from his recovery bed, the senator’s office has largely shielded him, raising questions about whether he is able to speak, walk or return to Capitol Hill for the remainder of his term.

Questions about McConnell’s health date back several years. In 2019, the senator fractured his shoulder after falling at his Louisville home. Since then, he has experienced a series of additional falls that resulted in injuries, including a concussion, facial cuts and a fractured rib, according to NPR, CNN and the BBC.

He has been hospitalized multiple times in recent years due to the incidents and other illness, though his most recent hospital stay — during which he also developed pneumonia — was particularly lengthy. Prior to the latest fall, he was often relying on a wheelchair to get around the Capitol.
