Spotify finally eliminates divisive new feature after user backlash: 'We know glitter is not for everyone'

Spotify has eliminated its temporary disco ball logo.

Users reacted negatively to the new design after it was temporarily implemented earlier this year.

The music streaming platform used the logo to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Spotify has eliminated a temporary logo change, months after courting user backlash to the design that many felt was visually unappealing.

In the music streaming service's latest app update on Thursday, the disco ball-themed logo — which morphed the clean, lime-green logo into a glistening, dark green mirrorball earlier this year — disappeared from view.

Entertainment Weekly has learned that the logo isn't changing back "due to any reactions online" specifically.

The temporary change came roughly two months ago in celebration of Spotify's 20th anniversary, as the Swedish music service was first founded in April 2006.

Spotify previously addressed negative fan reaction to the logo change in a social media post responding to a wave of online backlash.

"Alright, we know glitter is not for everyone," the service's X account wrote on May 17 in response to a Pop Crave post about the shift. "Our temp glow up ends soon. Your regularly scheduled Spotify icon returns next week."

The shift back to the regular logo, however, didn't come until mid-June during the most recent update to the Spotify app.

EW has reached out to Spotify for comment regarding the logo change.

In addition to changing its logo, Spotify also celebrated its 20th birthday with a wave of nostalgia-based features for users as part of the milestone year.

The rollout included graphic compilations allowing users to see the date they joined the service, how many songs they've listened to throughout their Spotify membership, and even the first-ever song they listened to on the application.

Elsewhere, Spotify has increased its presence with live music events and experiences, including the March 2025 Spotify Presents: Little Monster Press Conference show that saw Lady Gaga answering fan questions about her Mayhem album inside a themed space.

Other artists who've partnered with Spotify for live events include Tate McRae, who teamed with Spotify for an event in Toronto, and the Weeknd, who collaborated with Spotify for a live show celebrating his status as part of the streaming platform's "Billions Club" milestone club.
