A strange character trait has become one of the most talked-about parts of a hit superhero series, The Boys. Now, Antony Starr has opened up about how it started and why it stuck with audiences.

Homelander actor Antony Starr talks about his character’s ‘breast milk’ obsession on The Boys

Antony Starr says he never expected this detail to turn into a running joke on The Boys. While speaking with Jimmy Kimmel, he explained that the idea came from an early scene tied to Homelander’s past.

According to Starr, the character has “serious issues” tied to his upbringing. In Season 1, Homelander shares tension with a baby connected to his boss. That dynamic, he said, was already strange. But things escalated in Season 2 when the character discovered breast milk and consumed it as a way to feel connected. “Why not?” Starr recalled.

The moment turned out to be more than a one-off. Starr revealed that after filming the scene, he called showrunner Eric Kripke and suggested leaning into the humor. Kripke’s response was immediate, as he was already planning to expand it further.

The gag soon became a recurring element across episodes. “It’s really funny, it’s really funny, we’ve gotta do more with that, and he went, way ahead of you, I’m writing it into every episode,“ Starr remembered telling Kripke.

There is also a deeper layer to it. During the conversation, Fallon pointed out that Homelander, being genetically engineered, seeks comfort in unusual ways. Starr agreed, saying there’s a “deep-seated comfort” the character gets from milk, which ties back to his emotional instability and lack of a normal childhood.

Off-screen, the odd trait has followed Starr into real life. He shared that fans often joke about it when they meet him. Even waiters sometimes play along, casually offering him milk when taking orders. Starr said he usually laughs it off and declines, while still appreciating the humor.

Antony Starr has now become a household name, earning praise for his intense portrayal of Homelander, a role that demands both menace and unpredictability. Before The Boys, Starr was known for shows like Banshee, but this performance has arguably taken his career to a wider global audience.
