Producers of Violent Night 2 nearly introduced Mrs. Claus sooner than expected. That decision would have reshaped the sequel entirely. Producer Kelly McCormick has now revealed just how close the team came to locking in a completely different version of the character before Kristen Bell eventually landed the role.
Kristen Bell may not have been Violent Night 2’s Mrs. Claus
The 2022 action comedy almost ended with a post-credits scene featuring Santa’s wife. McCormick confirmed the creative team agonised over the choice, ultimately deciding against it after months of debate.
“We almost put a button in the back of Violent Night with Mrs. Claus,” she told SlashFilm. “If we would’ve done that, she would’ve been somebody totally different in this one, and it would’ve been a different movie, if she was already introduced.”
The indecision ran so deep that reportedly no offer was extended to any actor. McCormick admitted the process became tangled in overthinking. “We overthought it to the point where we never made an offer for the role of Mrs. Claus,” she said. That hesitation effectively cleared the path for Kristen Bell, whose casting the producer described as nothing short of divine intervention.

Bell’s history with star David Harbour helped open the door. The pair share a long friendship, though McCormick initially doubted the Frozen star would be available. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, we’ll never get her. Are you kidding? She’s busy and she’s amazing,’” she recalled. Her excitement was palpable when Bell would sign on, calling the moment “Christmas happening for the movie.”
Violent Night 2, releasing in theatres on December 4, sees Harbour’s Santa stripped of his magic after landing on the Naughty List. He must rediscover the holiday’s true meaning while facing a ruthless mobster terrorising a shopping mall.
Bell’s Mrs. Claus makes an entrance not just as emotional support but as a genuine fighter. McCormick described her performance as “this very loving sort of push toward Santa understanding how to get back on the nice list and also kicking major a–.”
Had the earlier cameo moved forward, the franchise would have committed to a different actor and a different story.
